running skirt

I did my first run this morning in a running skirt! This is the one I got at Target. I’ve seen a few girls at races and such wearing them and thought they were super cute but wasn’t sure how I’d feel running in a skirt I wanted to get a less expensive one to try out. I have to admit, I felt pretty damn cute in it! In the spirit of the flirty skirt, i wore a matching red top to match my shoes. I got the skirt in a medium and it was big around my waist but I felt the shorts underneath fit my thighs well. I was a little worried about it the skirt falling during the run, but it wasn’t an issue at all. HOWEVER, those shorts road up my thighs so bad! The plan for this mornings run was 5 miles and was accomplished (which since I was wearing new gear I should have considered saving that for a shorter run, but I was feeling risky), but I swear at some points that I would spark a fire between my legs as I’m blessed with inner thighs that touch, haha. In the end the chaffing was minimal but I ma have lost my cuteness factor when I was lifting the skirt to try to pull down the shorts…or if someone saw and thought I was giving out free shows…awkward.

I did notice that the shorts mainly went north when I was running hills, so maybe this particular skirt would be better on a flat run. I think I might just keep looking for a better quality skirt  (no offense C9, I actually have a lot of your products and like them) with shorts that stay put and use this one for leisurely sporting activities.

I joined the bandwagon and order some Amazing Grass that came in yesterday. I got a the sample packet combo and also a small tub of wheat grass and amazing superfood to try out. This morning I added a scoop of wheat grass to my smoothie (i love smoothies after a good workout, so refreshing and since my body doesn’t have to work to break down foods and digest them, it can get nutrients asap) and you can definitely taste it! It’s not a bad taste, but by the end I was a little overwhelmed with it. I made Josh a smoothie too but only added a half scoop to his and it wasn’t as strong at all. I think I’ll try that next time.

Our smoothie mixes this morning included:

  • 1 banana
  • handful frozen mango
  • 1/4 c. blueberries (to give that lovely green-gray color)
  • 1/2 c plain almond milk (regular skim milk for Josh)
  • Scoop of almond butter (peanut butter for Josh)
  • small handful spinach (since adding wheatgrass)
  • 1 scoop wheatgrass (1/2 for Josh)

I did notice this morning that I didn’t get the mid-morning droopy eye effect that I usually get. Since I’m generally up so early and working out, usually around 11:00 I start feeling a little bleh (which I also think is from weaning myself off coffee…1 month strong without the drip!) and I really didn’t start feeling hungry until 12…when usually I start dreaming of food by 10:30. Are all the claims true?!?! We shall see!

For lunch I had a sweet potato on spinach leaves with a generous dollop of mediterranean hummus from Trader Joe’s (one of my fav hummus’s) plus a side of water, plus a square of a peanut butter choco chip bar. Yummers! I wanted to start taking photos of my food, but I forgot the camera this morning. I brought one of the chocolate Amazing Grass packets to work today so if I’m feeling in need of a pick me up I’ll give it a try.

Tonight’s plan: Sushi making class! Can’t wait!

Trash TV to DVR tonight: Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion, part 2

Yay for Thursday!

Sister, Sister

The craziest thing happened today! There is a large dog park near where I work, so when Josh doesn’t have to work until the afternoon, he’ll bring Carley and Kenzie up there around lunchtime and I’ll go meet them. Well, today was one of those days, and when I got  to the park, there was another guy up there with his black lab and it was none other than Kenzie’s “real” sister from her original litter! It was so cute, that of course I had to take a pic!

Sisters! Kenzie and Joy

Sisters! Kenzie and Joy

Kenzie is on the left and Joy on the right. It were exchanging “notes” on their behavior traits and was comforted that Joy has also taken a liking to destroying household furniture! haha…atleast we know its in the genes and not something we’re doing! You can’t really tell from the pic but they are the exact same height, Kenz is just a few pounds heavier. They actually have a brother as well that we’ve heard from the lab rescue organization were we got Kenz that he is about 70 lbs too…tanks!

Ironically, there was a boy version of Carley at the park last week – literally exact replicas and both OBSESSIVE over fetch – but no connection. There’s something about that park…

In other news, the weekend of course was too short! I swear I blinked and it was Sunday night. I hate when that happens. Oh well. Saturday I had the best run I’ve had in a long time! The past couple short runs I’ve been on have just been runs where your legs feel like lead and it was hard to get thru. So, since I’m training for a upcoming half marathon, Saturdays are my long run days. This time around I’m taking more time to up the mileage (my first half in January went well, but I think I up mileage too quickly and had really bad knee pain), and Saturday’s plan was a 7 mile run. Best run ever! I went to a local park area that has a good path to follow that is long enough that you can run out pretty far and back and you don’t feel like you’re running in circles. I left Carley at home to sleep in (I don’t take her on runs over 6 miles) and manage 7 miles in 1:00:43. I could NOT believe I got done that quickly! The course was mostly flat which obviously helps! I kept checking my pace on my watch thinking I needed to slow down but I manage to keep it up. Average pace was 8:40. We’ll see how the next run goes and if I can do it again 🙂

Pop’s day was good. My dad was in Atlanta and visiting his parents, but is coming in town this week so we can celebrate then. I started the day doing another stair workout with bootcamp – and am feeling it today – and then the rest of the day was spent with Josh’s fam. We did a brunch in the park and later did pizza and ice cream floats for dinner. Unfortunately, by the time we ate again I was uber hungry and ate more than I wanted, but seriously, it was goooooooooooood. yum!

Well, Bachlorette time! Jillian is the best bachlorette yet. And I totally have a *teeny* crush on Reid! Such a cutie, love his glasses! Don’t tell Josh 😉

After a long Saturday of finishing some design projects, I was ready for some relaxation on Sunday. After a morning workout of stairs at the san diego convention center (steep climbs!), I found out that my great-grandmother had passed away. We all new her time was coming to a close as her body was just getting weaker and weaker and she had no appetite for food, but even as prepared as we were, it obviously is still sad and painful. My great-grandmother was an amazing and strong women who lived a very long, happy and loving life. She would have reached the big 100 in August. She was and will remain a huge inspiration to me; even at 99 she lived on her own (around the corner from my grandmother) and continued to take care of herself and home. She took care of my great-grandfather when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s for many years until he passed away. She loved him sooo much and even when his memory was the worst, he always remembered her and had a spark in his eye. I’m very thankful that for the most part, my great-grandmother had a peaceful passing and wasn’t battling cancer or any of the other many things that can effect a person. I will her smile and laugh dearly, and hope that I, too, am healthy and strong enough to take care of myself as she did when I’m her age.

the hump

Whew…it’s been a busy week! Taking 2 days off work last week, left me being a busy girl this week! It always happens the same way, last week was a pretty slow week work load wise, and the days I was gone so much stuff came in and new projects to do. I work for a relatively young company and am single handedly the graphic designer, marketing guru, and sales support departments. Great experience and resume additions, but it’s always go-go-go and everybody wants everything done ASAP! Keeps me on my toes and helps “quittin’ time” get here faster! Today has just been one of those days though, that I feel like a zombie and need sleep! Plus, with the June Gloom going strong in San Diego, it makes for the perfect days to be all snuggly on the couch with a book and movie….siiiiigh!

So, as I take a little break from work, i did a little internet window shopping and I want, I want, I want

the crew

the crew

Anyone who knows me, knows I have an adoration slight obsession with j. crew (and anthro). I squeal a little when I get the catalog in the mail and probably look thru it about 1000 times before I finally part ways with it. I just love the classic style and the Jackie cardigans are great as well. Its the old soul in me.

Anyone taking part in the push-up, sit-up, and squat challenge with N Her Shoes? I did the initial test Monday night and the results:

Push-ups: 15

Sit-ups: 75

Squats: 85

I take a bootcamp class 3-4 days a week that is all about push-ups, lunges, squats, etc so I know that definitely helped with the sit-ups and squats, but seriously, push-ups (“man” style) are so hard! I dread them, but I am excited for the challenge. I would love a little defining line in my upper arm!

Back to work I go…I leave you with this heart breaker and his birthday picture to me:

Iron Girl

To end the birthday activities, LeeAnn and I ran the Aflac Iron Girl 5k/10k. LeeAnn just started running again, so she opted for the 5k while I did the 10k. It was a good run, the weather was overcast and cool most of the run, but the sun started peaking out towards the end and it got warmer. I know some people get energized by the sun, but it totally takes everything out of me! The makes me lethargic, so while most people get excited for summer, I kind of dread it b/c I feel like I’m tired all the time. Oh, well, back to the run. It started at the Del Mar Horse Track and the 10k runners basically did a 5k loop twice and ended by running on the actual horse track, which is kind of neat.

There were a couple decent hills with a moderate incline, but nothing too drastic. The only bummer about the race, I would say, is that since the 10k runners started first, but the time we started our second loop the 5k runners were out there but there were a LOT of walkers and they wouldn’t move! I felt like there should have been someone out there directing walkers to the left, runners to the right or vice versa, so that was a lot of congestion. I ended the race in a time of 54:58, equaling a pace of 8:51, which I’m very happy with.

I will say, that Aflac knows how to put on the race, check out the swag! Besides what’s in the pic below, they gave out a re-usable tote, breakfast after the race (banana, juice, muffins, and yogurt. I ate the banana), mini-luna bars (which I may have taken more that my fair share, but you should have seen the girl in front of me – I thought she was just going to take the box), plus a lot more other little things.

I would definitely recommend this race; they have them at various locations around the country. And it’s women only, so if you’re female and want to try out a race, I think its a little less intimidating. And let’s not forget, the Iron Girl Pups!

Birthday Girl

So, yesterday was my birthday. I still can’t get over how much fun it was. I’m generally not a big “party girl” for my birthday, but I love doing something different and unique from a regular day as well as seeing friends and family. I slept in until 5:45ish (which is sleeping in for me as I’m generally up by 4:45/5) and got in a short 2.5 mile run with Carley. The activity for the day said you’d need your full energy for it and to not do a strenuous workout that day, but since I’m running a 10k on Sunday and I got to a bootcamp class on Fridays, I wanted to get some running in.

camera shy

Excuse the gapping hole in the couch. That was courtesy of Kenzie when we first got her and haven’t had the chance ($$$) to replace it yet. After the run, i got cleaned up and ran some errands and then went on to the main event…trapeze flying! I’ve never ever done this, but I always think its so amazing at shows to see people flying around and doing tricks and I happened to google it and found a place near San Diego that gives lessons and their beginners classes are on Thursday, so perfecto.

I was so pumped up and excited to do this but I tell you, as soon as I got there and saw everything, I started wondering what I got myself in to, but was just going to go with the flow. I was actually a couple minutes late (Josh can never be on time, drives me nuts!) so only got the tail in of the basic instructions and seriously, it was time to climb the ladder. And somehow, even though I was late to arrive, I got pushed up the ladder first. I’m not really scared of heights, but holy bananas, it was scary up there!

holding on for dear life

holding on for dear life

The bar you hold onto is a lot heavier than it looks. They give you commands of “Ready” and you basically lean out with your hips and chest with someone holding a rope that’s attached to the waist belt and then you life the bar over your head and wait for the command “Hemp” to jump and go. Well, at Ready they kept telling me to life the bar, and I was like, “I am!” Then the guy at the top (who was 19 and been doing this since he was 4!) yells “Hemp” and I don’t move! Haha…he literally had to push me off! But, once you go its SO fun and exhilarating! After doing just a basic swing a few times, they teach you how to bring your legs up and over the bar so you’ll be hanging from your knees. Oh my goodness, it was such a mental thing, but I couldn’t do it! But, I did manage to learn to do a backflip off the bar to land in the net.

I have to say, as scared and overwhelmed that I felt at times, it was totally worth it. I thought going in that the first jump would be challenging to get thru and after that I’d calm down and be fine, but every time I climbed to the top, I got so nervous! But, I would definitely recommend this and want to try it again!

After flying, we were meeting my dad for dinner. My dad and I have the same birthday, so when we are together on b’days (he splits his time between San Diego and Atlanta for work) we always have dinner together, and last night we chose Cheesecake Factory! Yum! My dad loves this place, and I enjoy it to, but the menu is insane! So many pages of choices. I decided on the Grill Eggplant sandwich since I had eaten an apple on the way back from trapeze (I was starved!) and I knew we were going to have dessert! The sandwich was very tasty, but kind of hard to eat as a sandwich…everything kept sliding out. And I totally had some fries on the side. For dessert, Josh got some cheesecake and I got mud pie that came with ice cream (I love me some ice cream), but when it got to the table, it could feed a village of 5,000, so we brought the cheesecake home, along with most of the mud pie!

Afterwards, Josh and I thought we’d hit up a late night movie, but we were both pretty beat and decided for a netflix movie at home, Bride Wars. And I tried to get a belly rub out of Kenzie and Carley, but had none of that and insisted I give them one instead. Spoiled rotten, those two!

26 and joining the circus

Today I turned 26 and entered the descent into the late 20s. Woah!! But, it was such a fun day and have to say one of the top birthdays I’ve had. I’m off to a movie to finish of the night, but I leave you with this before the recap tomorrow.
